The ribs help to protect the vital organs, the heart and lungs, contained within the rib cage. They are also vital to the process of breathing, for their movement, controlled by the intercostal muscles, changes the volume within the thoracic cavity - the volume enclosed by the rib cage and diaphragm. These changes in volume cause pressure changes in the cavity which lead to air either entering or leaving the lungs.
